The Teletronix LA-2A is a high-end optical stereo compressor that was originally developed by the legendary audio company of the same name. It's been used on countless recordings from just about every genre, including rock and pop music, jazz, hip hop and R&B. The compressor has a low ratio (1:10), which means it has a very natural sound and softens sharp transients without adding audible distortion. With its fast attack time and low sensitivity to overloads, the broadcast industry began using them as racks of broadcast limiters in control rooms during live transmissions — hence the nickname "the broadcaster's friend. The LA-2A also has a switchable attack time and a soft knee to control the release. Other great features include the ability to work in line, side or sum mode, as well as a choice of either Constant or Linear output gain reduction. Another nice feature is that you can use the same topology to make a compressor module for your DAW, with adjustable attack and release times to suit your needs. The LA-2A was originally released in 1975 and is still available today — it's one of those rare gear items that just never seems to get old! The original UAD LA-2A Plug-in was based on the Universal Audio LA-2A hardware unit and supported all major DAW platforms. Over time it's been updated with both new features and improvements, such as sample rate compatibility for Pro Tools Digi 001 and improved latency and CPU usage in Digital Performer (Mac only). The update in March 2013 introduced a variety of additional features:Additionally, this update added support for AAX 64. If you were previously using an older version of the plug-in in Pro Tools HD — including Pro Tools 10 — you must install UA's UAD v3 plug-ins to use it with AAX 64.
